The Tour:
- Departure from Djerba where you will visit the
centre of the Houmt Souk, capital of the Island: wisteria inundated
little squares, colourful covered markets, the fish market with its
traditional bargaining place, the ancient foundouks or caravanserails,
places where the desert caravans would stop over, to rest and sell the
wares they had brought back from the South and the East... superb square
courtyards with adjoining buildings and galleries where the merchants
stocked their wares.... Often these are renovated into hotels or craft,
antique and souvenir shops...here you can sip mint tea and taste delicious
oriental patisserie, buy gifts in the bazaars, (bargaining is a must!)
or wander around and admire the architecture of these typical old Arab
houses.
- From there, on to Douz via Matmata where you
can admire the village's troglodyte dwellings.
- Departure for the festival, a tribune built
in front of a desert backdrop (a spectacle of folklore dancing, horse
racing, camel racing, etc. Put on for you by the nomads of
the many regions of Africa).
- Taste the local speciality: Lamb "à la gargoulette"
- Visit to an abandoned village and a walk to
the Boujuihif marabou.
- Once all these places, part of the 7-day desert
trek (dunes, valleys, tamarisk
trees, desert roses) have been visited, return to Djerba
via Douz and Nouaïel.
